Recently the Form 2 children enjoyed a fantastic day with Florence Nightingale. In the morning they helped Florence prepare for her trip to Scutari by making a variety of objects for the soldiers. These included clay candle holders, pill boxes, diaries, lockets and medals.
Once Florence had arrived at the hospital they helped her to identify the suitcases of some of the people who had accompanied her on the trip. To do this the children had to learn about these people and carefully investigate a wide variety of Victorian artifacts. They found this to be a particularly interesting session as the majority of items had never been seen before.
After lunch we were at the hospital and the children spent time helping Florence with some very important jobs. They carried out tasks such as using a wash board to do the hospital washing, ironing, preparing food for the soldiers and scrubbing and sweeping the hospital. They also really enjoyed being patients and nurses!
All of the children had a fabulous day and learnt so much about the life of Florence Nightingale and her achievements in the Crimean War.
We would all like to say a very big thank you to the parents who volunteered to help us all day. We would not have had such a great day without their support and participation.
