Widford Lodge Friends

Friends of Widford Lodge (FOWL) was initially set up as a sports support group where parents volunteered to drive children to matches and raise funds to buy match kit and sports equipment.

It has now evolved into a group of volunteer parents who meet regularly to organise school events to raise funds to further enrich the children’s experience at school as well as raising money for local and national charities.

Our events are advertised around the school, in the Headteacher’s twice monthly “From The Study” newsletter, via our FOWL reps or school email.  These events include:

This event takes place on a Summer’s afternoon when lessons are adjusted in order that all children are able to attend and enjoy the fun! The school is filled with stalls and activities for all age groups with Form 6 children encouraged to organise and co-ordinate their house stalls and run them on the day with the help of other Prep children.

In addition, FOWL, together with additional parent volunteers, then run a number of stalls for the children as well as refreshments, a bake sale and a raffle.

The FOWL team also take great delight in hosting and funding events for the children such as Easter egg hunts with the help of the real Easter bunny, visits from Father Christmas and live reindeer and festive parties led by a children’s entertainer.

FOWL also arrange a number of other events and fundraisers throughout the school year which in the past have included:

  • End of school year Inflatable afternoon.
  • Christmas market.
  • Children created Christmas cards and gifts.
  • Mother’s Day pop up shop donating to Young Minds Charity.
  • Father’s Day gift sale donating to Prostate Cancer UK.
  • Coffee and bake sale for Macmillan Cancer.

Historically, FOWL hold a second-hand uniform sale once a term where children are always welcome and which offers a great opportunity to meet other families at the school.

Additionally, parents are very welcome to view and purchase uniform directly from FOWL during the course of the school year by making an appointment via e-mail: fowlcontact@aol.com

Parents are encouraged to donate any pre-loved school uniform in good condition to FOWL in order that funds generated at sales may then contribute towards future activities or school equipment.

Funds raised by FOWL through events, fundraisers and uniform sales are then used to contribute towards school equipment such as the new all-weather sports surface, a wooden gazebo, outdoor tables, hockey and playground sports equipment as well as new staging for the school hall.

In addition, funds are also put towards visiting speakers and workshops which have included:

  • African Dance Workshop.
  • Forensic science day.
  • 2 Johns online safety talk made to children, teachers and parents.
  • Creative writing pirate visitor.
  • Visit from a Polar explorer.
  • Drumming workshop.

Parent support is so important in the success of FOWL and we look forward to seeing you at our events and fundraisers, but what else can you do?……

  • Showcase your baking skills! We always need cakes for our school fayres.
  • Donate raffle prizes.
  • Suggest ideas for fund raising.

We generally have a FOWL representative for each year group and also always need extra hands at our events and therefore are grateful for any help you are able to give whenever you are available.

If you have any interest in volunteering or joining the FOWL team, please do get in touch by e-mail on fowlcontact@aol.com.
